Athena Security has announced the upcoming release of a major software solution update aimed at enhancing X-ray screening and weapons detection processes.

The company says that the update includes several new features designed to improve safety awareness and streamline procedures.

Key features of the weapons detection system upgrade include:

  • Continuous safety presence monitoring for X-ray stations: A new operational safety feature (patent pending) which helps stop visitors from accidental exposure to radiation when operators leave the X-ray unattended
  • Local AI for faster threat detection: A new on-device AI model now runs directly on Apple iPads used at AI based X-ray stations, significantly reducing detection latency which helps the X-ray stop the belt faster if a weapon is found, thus trapping threats inside the X-ray. The model currently identifies knives, firearms and ammunition, with additional object recognition as requested for clients. This improves response time significantly – detecting threats earlier, enabling quicker action and reducing potential harm
  • Enhanced X-ray feed controls: Operators can now crop and zoom live X-ray feeds for detailed inspection of specific items, improving safety with focus without affecting the AI’s full-scope analysis. This gives users more control during inspection, improving threat identification during manual review
  • Semi-automated operator testing: Makes the operator test the X-ray machine before operating to make sure it is in proper working order before using
  • Centralized operator overwatch: Enables expert oversight of weapons detection from a central command center. Alerts are transmitted to a data center for review, reducing the need for highly trained onsite personnel and leading to significant time and cost savings for the organization
