Chile has extended a contract with IDEMIA for digital documents to help update the country’s civil registry, new reports say.

As outlined by La Voz de Chile, a 10-year contract between IDEMIA and the country was previously signed which included the provision of digital ID cards and biometric passports.

Now, under the terms of the renewed contract for one more year, the country’s Civil Registry will operate the system, instead of IDEMIA, reducing the total cost from $700 million to $276 million.

More than 3.3 million passports and 29 million identity cards have been issued to the country’s population since IDEMIA began operating in the country in 2012, the news outlet says.
