Brian Telljohann – Director of Product Management, Commercial Electronics for Allegion speaks to SJA about access control trends.

Can you give me a brief overview of the products Allegion supplies?

At Allegion, our mission is to help keep people safe and secure where they live, learn, work and connect.

With more than 30 brands sold in 120 countries across the globe, we specialize in security around the doorway and beyond.

Our team of local sales consultants provide expertise and guidance on everything from residential and commercial locks, door closers and exit devices, steel doors and frames to access control and sophisticated sliding door systems.

You will find our popular brands like Von Duprin, Schlage and LCN in schools, hospitals and office buildings.

Our commercial electronics and wireless locks brand, Schlage is trusted in over 40 million homes, schools, office buildings and businesses and can be found in popular home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowes.

What trends are we seeing in access control at the moment?

As far as trends, we are seeing better, more efficient connected ecosystems that provide enhanced flexibility and value for the end user.

Although we provide our own software solutions, we design products to seamlessly integrate with leading PACS and Proptech providers.

We are focused on delivering greater ecosystem alignment with technology alliances and software providers to meet the ever-changing needs of the market.

Our goal is to facilitate best-in-class user experiences from software to hardware; meeting end users’ needs today and in the future with scalable solutions.

We are also seeing credential interoperability as a growing trend.

Rather than being locked into a proprietary model, interoperability enables convenient experiences and expands security by empowering end users with the ability to choose access control solutions regardless of existing credential technology.

This has become increasingly important as demand for mobile credential solutions continues to grow.

What values define Allegion?

Our mission at Allegion is to enable Seamless Access and a Safer World.

We are redefining security though new technologies and innovations.

For example, we just launched an expanded portfolio of Schlage mechanical locks with best-in-class indicators that provide clear “locked” messaging which can be clearly seen from across the room.

This solution delivers a new level of peace of mind in K-12 and higher education environments; teachers feel more confident and students are better prepared to learn when they know the classroom door is locked.

Even more important than selling products, we work with industry affiliations including the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS), Security Industry Association (SIA) as well as Safe and Sound Schools to help educate the market on best practices that meet standards for fire, life safety and accessibility.

Our knowledgeable consultants help school districts develop plans and provide tools to seek available funding for security upgrades.

What are the company’s plans for next year?

We are focused on bringing innovation and greater value to the markets we currently serve.

For instance, the Schlage XE360 is our latest wireless lock family that was specifically designed for the multifamily market.

Voice of customer research guided requirements for durability, feature sets, aesthetic design and price points which are significantly different than institutional markets.

With an innovative FleX Module, the XE360 Series can be easily upgraded in the field to allow migration from an offline to networked solution and to adapt to emerging trends in security and connectivity down the road.

We will continue to expand this market-based portfolio over the next few years.

Today’s world is digital, mobile and connected.

We know that smart hardware can provide greater levels of safety, security and efficiency.

With the adoption of mobile credentials and a desire for solutions that reduce friction, we will maintain focus on streamlining access control for end users across all markets for years to come.
