The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) is notifying current and retired members that personal information has been compromised following a cybersecurity incident involving a ransomware that affected the organization’s systems.

On 30 May 2022, the OSSTF/FEESO discovered that an unauthorized third party had accessed and encrypted its systems between 25 and 30 May 2022.

The organization hired a cybersecurity firm to contain and investigate the incident, to determine its scope and the nature of the information involved. At the time, the OSSTF/FEESO notified its members about the incident and ongoing investigation.

Following this review, the organization conducted an eDiscovery process to review the personal information that may have been impacted which took several months to complete. The OSSTF/FEESO is therefore now reaching out to current and retired members with details about the personal information involved in the incident.

According to the OSSTF/FEESO, there is currently no evidence at this time of the data being misused. However, depending on the type of personal information impacted, the OSSTF/FEESO may provide credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to affected individuals at the organization’s expense for one year.

“We regret any concern or inconvenience this incident may cause to our valued members. OSSTF/FEESO takes the protection of the personal information of our members seriously and we are committed to taking all necessary steps to prevent a similar incident from reoccurring,” the organization said in a statement.
