The Ministry of Public Safety for Panama announced that the country seized a record number of drugs last year, as reported in Reuters.

The news outlet says that Panama seized 126.5 tons, most of which was cocaine, as drugs were trafficked through the country. Twenty-three tons are reported to have been found in containers on the Atlantic coast with destinations intended for the US and Europe.

According to the report, the number of drugs seized set a record for a second consecutive year.

“Panama is a transit country for drugs, what we do is a containment operation,” Minister of Public Security Juan Manuel Pino told reporters.

The drugs were seized in more than 471 operations, which included the arrest of 619 people, the report says.
