Jean-Paul Jansen, President of Jansen Industrie, speaks to SJA about his company’s unique concrete barrier planters that provide security for urban environments.

Can you tell me a bit about Jansen Industrie?

We are a family owned business and have been operating in the world of concrete for the last 50 years.

Along side our urban concrete furniture division, we specialize in public security with our movable or fixed urban concrete barrier planters.

Their contemporary design allows them to blend in within all kinds of environment: government, municipal, schools, commercial, industrial, residential projects, bike paths, stadiums, airports, etc.

Why did you develop these concrete barrier planters for urban environments?

We were approached by the US Government to create something solid and aesthetic but also temporary for an embassy in Canada.

One thing lead to another. We now have a whole family of planters with different sizes and weights that can be used in different situations.

What makes them unique?

Designed to not break and roll at impact, the angles of our planters were perfectly chosen to execute their mandates to protect urban environments.

Our planters also have an exemplary finish that hardens the surface and makes them anti-graffiti at the same time, meaning that they require a lot less maintenance from the clients.

The integration of a screen that our clients can use for instant messaging in the concrete barrier planters has also never been done before.

Now, in an urban area, they can protect, add plants and trees and send important messages or advertising to the public and be pleasing to the eye at the same time.

What are your plans for the future?

A solar version will soon be available.

Even with the integration of a screen in the front of the planters, it doesn’t decrease its capabilities.

With our patent design, no compromise has been taken into construction of our products.

Our specialty is creating elements that are long lasting, that can blend themselves in the urban environment and do their job with aesthetics and functionality in mind.
