Thousands of protesters came to Lima, Peru on 19 January, reports in Reuters say.

The march was estimated to be around 3,500 strong and on some streets, rocks were thrown at police in riot gear, while one historic building caught fire.

Canada-based miner Hudbay said in a statement that protesters had entered the site of its Peru unit, damaging and burning key machinery and vehicles.

The news outlet highlights that in other areas of Peru, such as southern Arequipa, police fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who tried to take over the airport, leading officials to announce the suspension of operations at the Arequipa and Cusco airports.

Across the country, road blockades were implemented, including around Lima, where police also increased surveillance of roads.

Currently, the death toll from the mounting protests stands at 45.
