Greg Young, Vice President with PAC reveals how one of the leaders for tool mounting brackets in the fire safety market is making huge inroads into the security sector.

Tell us about PACs offerings for the security sector

Greg Young, VP, PAC

Very early on in our company history, naval shipbuilders were looking for ways to organize and mount tools. Every navy ship carries tools for firefighting, damage control and other threats. The founder of our company used his experience in the Navy to develop several products for the challenges and standards of the US Military. In the years afterwards – our navy solutions then crossed the boundary into other military branches as well as into law enforcement.

Breaching tools are very similar between fire and security. The exception is that security tools are predominantly black. Therefore PAC makes all-black tool mounts for the security market. Some products are available in more specialized colors like desert tan and olive green. Because PAC products are extremely rugged, they are used on vehicles for law-enforcement, military, homeland security, SWAT, CERT, border patrol and the like.

What’s the biggest change in the past 30 years?

There certainly have been many notable changes but the internet has brought several security dealers and manufacturers from around the world to our doorstep. With the internet we are communicating solutions for customers near and far. Our ability to update our dealers and distributors requires far less time and effort than years ago. PAC tool mounting solutions are not unique to one customer. It’s very easy for a customer to see, in pictures, how a particular tool mounting solution would benefit their department. This wasn’t possible 30 years ago, leaving the door open to hasty and inefficient tool mounting solutions.

Advice the people starting this business

We do business with a diverse group in the Security segment, both in the loose equipment dealer and OEM categories. PAC is a manufacturer of tool mounting components, sold through our dealers & through OEMs as a component of their assemblies or vehicles. Our advice is to try to draw on your own experience in the security industry. Solve a problem in a way that is better than existing solutions and promote WHY yours is better. Your unique value statement will resonate with customers who will become your biggest fans.

How is PAC dealing with the post pandemic situation and economic challenges?

2-ISJ- EXCLUSIVE: The Last Word with Greg Young
The Last Word with Greg Young, VP, PAC is on page 80 of the June issue of SJA

Like everyone else we are faced with cost increases on basic materials and freight. Fleeting supply shortages across a variety of items continue to challenge us. These challenges are only making us stronger, though. The need for emergency services is getting stronger also. We see the need for quality mounts that reduce overall costs by controlling loss and replacement costs are becoming more of the mainstream thought process – not an afterthought.

Additionally, OEM factories are facing labor shortages, so they look to component manufacturers, like PAC, to provide ready to install solutions saving them precious engineering and labor resources. By replacing their custom manufactured items with PAC off-the-shelf components and kits, we are seeing many instances where specialty vehicle and equipment manufacturers are realizing process efficiency.

What is the forecast for 12 months?

First, longtime PAC employees Mike McGuire and Tom Trzepacz have been vital in getting PAC into the security spaces we’re in now. Our products carry a strong reputation in fire, but we have not promoted them strongly in the security industry. To help us get the word out to our security partners, PAC welcomes our newest employee, DJ Kuenzi, a Marine Corps veteran with 20 years experience in marketing. We believe PAC is poised for growth in security and we are very excited to be a part of the new Security Journal Americas.
