A security breach at the US Marshals Service (USMS) has compromised sensitive information, new reports say.

As outlined by NBC News, a statement issued on 27 February by USMS spokesperson, Drew Wade said that “the affected system contains law enforcement sensitive information, including returns from legal process, administrative information and personally identifiable information pertaining to subjects of USMS investigations, third parties and certain USMS employees.”

According to Wade, the incident occurred on 17 February when a ransomware and data exfiltration event affecting a USMS system was discovered. The system was subsequently disconnected from the network and the Justice Department initiated a forensic investigation.

After briefing senior department officials, Wade said that “those officials determined that it constitutes a major incident.”

A senior law enforcement official added that the incident at the Marshals Service has affected sensitive information from law enforcement concerning the subjects of USMS investigations.
